Local footpaths and walks
The quiet seclusion of the peaceful vale where Ellen Hall is situated makes this the perfect destination for a “get away from it all” break. This unfortunately means guests do need their own transport as the area is not served well by public transport. There’s a network of bridle paths leading straight from the door.
For those wanting more, Cockermouth, a bustling market town and the birthplace of William Wordsworth is only a few miles away, and the capital of the North Lakes, Keswick, less than half an hour’s drive along Bassenthwaite Lake.
The Keswick area is host to outdoor pursuit centres, a marina, many famous restaurants and even boasts it’s own “Theatre by the Lake”.
Less than three miles from Ellen Hall is the beautiful heritage coastline of Cumbria, while Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall, and Scotland are all within easy reach.

Jennings (Shop & Tours)
Take a trip around Cockermouth’s brewery.
Jennings have been brewing traditional beers for 160 years, and still use the same traditional methods that were used by their founder as long ago as 1828, in the village of Lorton. In 1874 the brewery moved to a site at the foot of Cockermouth Castle, at the confluence of the River Cocker and River Derwent, a site which was influenced by the availability of pure and plentiful water from the Castle well. The well has supplied the Castle with pure water since around the time of the Norman Conquest, and helps to give Jennings ales their distinctive flavour.
A one hour tour takes you round the Jennings Brewery, explaining such intriguing brewery expressions as Hop Back and Mash Tun. The tour is completed in the best way possible with the chance to sample some ale, the famous Jennings Bitter noted for its malty taste, Cocker Hoop, Cumberland Ale or the strong Sneck Lifter.
